A Simple Habit With A Powerful Impact
LEARN
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
- Understand how growing a garden supports the environment and healthy living
- Learn the basics of planting, composting, and caring for edible or native plants
- Develop responsibility, observation skills, and appreciation for natural systems
WHAT TO DO
Encourage students to participate in planting and caring for a garden–whether in containers, raised beds, or a schoolyard plot. Suggested activities include:
- Start a classroom or community garden with herbs, vegetables, or flowers
- Create plant care charts and assign watering or weeding tasks
- Make recycled pot planters and decorate them with eco-messages
- Track the growth of a plant with weekly observation journals
- Host a “Plant a Seed Day” or garden celebration to share progress
WHY IT MATTERS
Gardening teaches students to care for the planet and themselves:
- Plants absorb carbon dioxide and help clean the air
- School gardens promote healthier food choices and reduce food miles
- Learning to grow food builds self-sufficiency and awareness of seasonal cycles
- Gardens help pollinators thrive and reduce urban heat islands
- By growing their own garden, students become active caretakers of their local environment
THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT
- Plants require sunlight, water, soil, and nutrients to grow
- Composting turns food waste into rich soil for plants, reducing landfill waste
- Gardens promote biodiversity and support soil health
- Photosynthesis turns sunlight into energy and helps reduce greenhouse gases
- Observing plant growth teaches cycles, patterns, and real-world science applications
